Dear student,

Thank you for your interest in the Ph.D. program at our Medical School. We are proud that we can now offer a variety of Doctoral courses.

The First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague implements postgraduate scientific education together with the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, 3rd Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen and Faculty of Science University as well as with biomedically oriented institutes of the Academy of Sciences and Research Institutes of the Ministry of Health. The aim is to prepare the Faculty graduates for independent work in basic as well as applied research in one of basic biomedical fields. The concept of studies and the requirements for _every field are specified by the Specialists Board, composed of scientists from all participating institutions. Basic profile courses with the theoretical or practical (laboratory) bias are available for the doctorands. The programme is aimed at any Czech or foreign university graduates who have passed the enrollment procedure. The studies may be implemented on a full-time or part-time (combined) basis.

Duration and Completion of Study [top]

Full-time courses last for four years as a minimum. A full-time doctorand has the status of a student with all the respective juridical and social consequences.

The requirements for successful completion of the study are:

  • to pass the state doctoral examination in choosen field
  • to defend a thesis, compiled on the basis of own published papers.

The graduates are awarded the academic degree "doctor" (abbreviated as Ph.D. after the name).

How to be admitted [top]

Students are selected on the basis of an entrance examination. The preconditions of being admitted to the postgraduate course at our faculty are:

  • select the topic and contact the advisor (see "How to Apply" section below)
  • send filled-in application form (pdf, doc) and attachments on time (see "How to Apply" section)
  • successfully pass the admission examination

How and When to Apply [top]

Each student can apply once per academic year to each study programme.

First, select and contact the advisor

  • select the appropriate field from the List of Courses and Tutors
  • find and contact the academic advisor responsible for the selected field
  • request the letter of acceptance from the advisor

Then, please send us:

  • filled-in and signed application form (pdf, doc) accompanied by:
  • a letter of acceptance from the advisor
  • your CV
  • recommendation letter
  • a copy of your diploma - masters degree - MD or equivalent
  • Official translation of diploma
  • Medical Degree diploma validation (if the obtained outside The Czech Republic)
  • a short annotation of your research program, review of your
    publication record up to date
  • a confirmation of your medical practice if applicable

NOTE: If some of the documents are yet not available, it might be sufficient to provide those during enrolment latest, please ask for details.

NOTE2: You will need a Work Permit by Ministry of Health if any clinical patient contact can be expected during doctoral studies.

The deadline for sending regular applications to our mailing address is April 30, 2012.

We will respond to your application electronically within 3 business days. Also the Invitation Letter for the Entrance Exam will be sent by post in May. In case the Invitation Letter was needed earlier, please let us know.

Entrance Exam [top]

Students are accepted on the basis of oral entrance examinations taken in respective language (English or Czech) of the program that the students applies for. The examination is supervised by Faculty's examiners and selected advisor.

  • Terms: regular term: June 2012
  • Visa: in case that visa is required, a short-term (tourist) visa is sufficient for the exam
  • Invitation letter and e-mail will be sent to every applicant who meets all the criteria.
  • Cost the application fee payable before the exam is EUR 50,-

Visa [top]

  • Students from many countries do not need a Visa to enter or study at our University.
  • In case that a Visa is required, please apply to the Czech embassy or Consulate well in advance, i.e. 3 months prior to the planned departure.
    For the:
    • entrance exam - a short term visa is sufficient
    • enrolment - a long term Visa is required

Tuition and Costs [top]

Annual net tuition fee:

  • For the study taken in English the tuition fee is EUR 1.500,- (full-time study programme), EUR 1.000,- (combined study programme)
  • At present no tuition fee is charged for the courses taken in Czech
    (In this special case you have to ask Czech Embassy in the capital city
    of your country. You can get the scholarship as Czech student, cca 200,-
    USD/month), or you can ask the Institute of Language and Professional Training (UJOP)

Additional expenses (not included in tuition):

  • These represent lodging, meals, books, transportation, etc.

Enrolment [top]

Enrolment takes place in Prague in September before the semester begins and it requires:

  • Admission valid  for the respective academic year
  • A Signed Contract with the Dean of our Faculty.
  • A certified copy of your diploma
  • A certified English translation of the diploma
  • A Long-term Visa, if applicable
  • Work Permit if clinical patient contact can be expected due to studies
  • Valid ID (Passport or equivalent)
  • Enromnent Form

NOTE: The signatures and seals on the original of your diploma must be verified by:

  • either the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where the respective school is located where you have passed
  • or the Notary Public plus the Embassy or a representative office of the Czech Republic in the respective country, if not stated by an international agreement otherwise.

Living in Prague [top]

There is no doubt that you will find Prague very attractive, easy to live in and still affordable.

Academic Calendar [top]

The Academic year is divided into two semesters, each followed by exam period.

  • The winter semester starts at the end of September and lasts 15 weeks. It is interrupted by 2-week Christmas vacation and followed by a 4-week examination period.
  • The summer semester lasts 15 weeks and is followed by an examination period and summer vacation.

PhD courses are usually offers during semesters. For PhD students it is typical that apart from courses all remining time (not limited to semesters) is spent in the labs doing research.
